2 Days in Paraty: An Adventure Through Brazil’s Charming Beach Town

Paraty is a captivating destination nestled along Brazil’s coastline, brimming with history, charm, and natural beauty. For travelers seeking a relaxing escape between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Paraty offers a perfect 2-day itinerary filled with picturesque streets, captivating architecture, and tranquil beaches. However, despite the town’s stunning reputation, it’s essential to understand the best ways to make the most of your time here. This article will guide you through an unforgettable experience in Paraty, taking you through the historical center, its quaint beaches, and everything else you should know to have the most enjoyable 2 days in Paraty.

The Charm of Paraty: A Brief Introduction

Paraty is more than just a beach town; it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site rich in culture and history. The town’s historical center is one of the most well-preserved colonial towns in Brazil, offering an authentic view of Brazil’s colonial past. Despite the weather often being unpredictable, Paraty’s old-world charm and scenic beauty are enough to win over any traveler.

When we arrived in Paraty, we had one goal in mind—explore the beauty of this charming town. However, the rain, which seemed to follow us from Rio de Janeiro, threw a small wrench in our plans. Nonetheless, we made the best of our visit by embracing the rain, strolling through the historic center, and even taking some time to relax on the quieter beaches near our hotel.

Getting Around Paraty: Navigating the Streets

One thing we quickly discovered is that transportation in Paraty can be a bit tricky for newcomers. Unlike larger cities, where taxis are abundant, Paraty’s public transportation system can be quite confusing. We initially tried to grab a taxi, but the prices felt steep for such a short ride. Instead, we opted for the public bus, which cost a mere 2.3R or 58 cents for a short ride into the town center.

Public buses in South America often come with their challenges, and Paraty is no exception. There are no clear signs or maps showing bus routes, but we were fortunate enough to receive help from friendly locals who guided us on the correct route. The kindness of the people in Paraty was one of the highlights of our trip.

Once we reached the historical center, we chose to walk around as much as possible. The streets in Paraty are charming, but the cobblestone paths, combined with rainy weather, can make walking a little tricky. Nevertheless, we loved exploring the town on foot as we got to see all the intricate details that make Paraty so unique.

Exploring the Historic City Center of Paraty

The heart of Paraty is its charming historical center. Walking through the streets feels like stepping back in time, with well-preserved colonial buildings lining every corner. Paraty’s cobblestone streets are an iconic feature, though walking on them can be a challenge, especially in wet weather. Still, the town’s charm more than makes up for the minor inconveniences.

The historical center is filled with stunning buildings, including churches like the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, a beautiful example of colonial architecture. One of the best features of the city center is the vibrant colors of the buildings, ranging from pastel blues and greens to bright yellows and reds.

A beautiful canal runs through the town, leading from the ocean to the heart of Paraty. Along the canal, you’ll find small boats docked, offering tours that will take you out onto the water, although we didn’t have the best weather to make the most of this. Nonetheless, the canal adds to the charm and tranquility of the town.

A Taste of Paraty: Dining in This Beachside Haven

No visit to Paraty would be complete without indulging in some of the local cuisine. As a coastal town, seafood is the dish to try. We spent a couple of hours wandering through the streets looking for the perfect restaurant, finally deciding on a seafood restaurant near the water. The portion sizes in Paraty were large, and we found that most meals were meant for two people, which was perfect for us since we were traveling as a couple.

Dining in Paraty is a bit more expensive compared to other areas in Brazil, with most meals starting around 25R or $6. However, the quality of the food made it worth the price. For us, it became a regular habit to have a large late lunch, which filled us up enough that we didn’t need dinner. One thing we noticed was that many of the restaurants served large dishes, a perfect opportunity to share and try multiple flavors at once.

Enjoying Paraty’s Beautiful Beaches: A Moment of Relaxation

Although we didn’t experience perfect beach weather, we still took some time to visit Paraty’s beaches. The larger beach near the historic downtown area is quite lively, though we preferred the quieter, smaller beaches near our hotel. Even though it wasn’t sunny enough for swimming, we enjoyed a peaceful walk along the shore, taking in the sound of the waves and the fresh ocean breeze.

Jabaquara Beach, located near our hotel, is one of the quieter spots, offering a peaceful escape from the busier beaches in the town center. The beach’s tranquility made it the perfect place to unwind after a day of sightseeing, and we appreciated the easy access from our hotel.

Making the Most of Your Time in Paraty

When visiting Paraty, it’s important to remember that the weather can be unpredictable. While the town is stunning and filled with charm, it’s best to prepare for rain, especially during the off-season months. Fortunately, Paraty is a place where you can still enjoy your time, rain or shine. Whether you’re exploring the historical center, relaxing by the beach, or indulging in delicious seafood, there’s no shortage of things to do in this lovely town.

The Unforeseen Challenges: A Slight Disappointment with Transportation

One aspect of our trip to Paraty that we didn’t anticipate was the challenges with transportation. Although Paraty is conveniently located between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, the bus system leaving the town was less than ideal. We were surprised to find that there was only one bus company, Reunidas, that operated the route we needed. Our bus ride to São Paulo, which Google Maps predicted would take only 3 hours, ended up taking 6.5 hours due to a subpar route and several unnecessary stops along the way. It was a disappointing end to an otherwise lovely trip.

Final Thoughts: Would We Return to Paraty?

In the end, our 2 days in Paraty were enjoyable, but they didn’t fully live up to our expectations. The town’s charm is undeniable, but the beaches weren’t as beautiful as we had imagined, and the unpredictable weather added a layer of challenge to our visit. Had we more time and a less rushed schedule, we might have explored other coastal destinations further north of Rio de Janeiro, where the beaches are renowned for their beauty. However, Paraty’s historical center and the hospitality of the locals made it a worthwhile stop on our journey through Brazil.
