Day 1 in Luxor: Uncovering Ancient Wonders

Luxor is home to some of Egypt’s most famous historical landmarks, and if you’re a history enthusiast or simply intrigued by ancient cultures, this city will undoubtedly captivate you. On day one, we embarked on a half-day guided tour with our hotel, El Mesala, to dive into the stories of the past. Although we’re not usually the biggest fans of guided tours, we decided to experience it to see if we could gain more insight into the wonders around us.

Valley of the Kings

Our first stop was the Valley of the Kings, one of the most famous burial sites in the world. This monumental site was home to the tombs of pharaohs such as Ramses II and King Tutankhamun. As we entered, we were informed that only a handful of tombs were open to the public. The main entry ticket (100 LE or $12.75) grants access to three tombs, and additional tickets are available for famous tombs like King Tut’s for an extra fee. Although photography isn’t allowed inside the tombs, the paintings, hieroglyphs, and carvings within each tomb are nothing short of breathtaking.

We visited the Tomb of Thothmes III, where the solitude allowed us to reflect on its historical significance. Next, we made our way to the Tomb of Ramses IV and finally, the ornate Tomb of Tausert and Setnakht—each tomb offering a unique glimpse into the lives of the ancient Egyptian royalty. The atmosphere was tranquil, despite the large crowds.

Hatshepsut Temple

From the Valley of the Kings, we proceeded to the Hatshepsut Temple at Al-Deir Al-Bahari, dedicated to one of Egypt’s most powerful female pharaohs. The entrance fee was 50 LE ($6.40), but the experience was worth it. Hatshepsut, often overshadowed by her male counterparts, had a significant impact on Egyptian history, and her temple reflects her grandeur. The surrounding cliffs provided an impressive backdrop to the temple, which is carved directly into the mountainside.

Colossi of Memnon

Our next stop was the Colossi of Memnon, two massive statues standing guard over the remains of the temple of Amenhotep III. These statues are a striking feature of Luxor, even though the temple is no longer standing. The colossal figures are well-preserved, and it’s fascinating to stand before them, imagining the grandeur they once symbolized.

After a long day of exploring, we headed back to our hotel for a well-deserved break and a traditional Egyptian meal.

Day 2 in Luxor: A Deep Dive into Local History

By day two, we decided to take a more independent approach. With a driver arranged through our hotel, we set out to explore more of the treasures that Luxor has to offer, at our own pace.

Karnak Temple

Our first stop of the day was the Karnak Temple, the largest religious building in the world. Entry was 80 LE ($10.25), and it was one of the most breathtaking experiences of our time in Luxor. This vast complex, which includes the famous Great Hypostyle Hall, contains over 130 massive columns and numerous obelisks. The scale of the temple is simply astonishing, and its size gave us plenty of space to explore and take photos without feeling crowded.

Karnak was my personal favorite. It’s a site where you can wander off the beaten path, avoid the tourist crowds, and still appreciate the grandeur of Egyptian architecture. The site also boasts a variety of smaller shrines, statues, and temples, offering an intimate glimpse into the religious practices of ancient Egypt.

Valley of the Nobles

Next, we visited the Valley of the Nobles, home to the tombs of the elite. While not as large or as ornate as the tombs in the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Nobles offered a quieter experience. Here, the tombs are smaller but still beautifully decorated with hieroglyphs. The entry fee was 40 LE ($5.10), and the valley was far less crowded, allowing for a more peaceful visit.

Deir el-Medina (Valley of the Artisans)

The Valley of the Artisans, also known as Deir el-Medina, is where the workers who built the tombs of the pharaohs were buried. These craftsmen and their families lived a difficult yet crucial life. The tombs are smaller, but the intricate carvings and murals that remain are stunning. Our guide, although helpful, was a bit too insistent on tips, but we managed to enjoy the experience despite this.

Medinet Habu Temple

As the day progressed, we made our way to Medinet Habu Temple, dedicated to Ramses III. Unlike the other temples, this one was less crowded, and we could take our time appreciating the detailed carvings. The temples here were smaller, but the sense of calm and historical depth made it an incredibly rewarding stop.

Luxor Temple

Our final stop in Luxor was the Luxor Temple, located right in the heart of the city. This temple, while smaller than Karnak, is no less impressive. The grand entrance features massive statues of Ramses II, and the inner sanctuary contains intricate carvings. We visited in the evening, and though the lighting wasn’t ideal for photography, the site was still magnificent.
