To-Do List: Before You Travel

While I absolutely love to travel and go on vacation there are always things that must be done before I leave. I used to sit down and make a list of everything that had to be done, always seeming to remember things when I was laying in bed or taking a shower. To make things easier on myself, I created a list of things to do before a vacation that I reference whenever I book a trip.

All Travel

A week or 2 before the trip

  • Schedule someone to watch our cat
  • Send flight numbers and hotel information to our family

Right before we leave

  • Turn down heat/air
  • Take out trash
  • Clean out our wallets with anything that we don’t need – this way should it get lost or stolen we only have to replace the bare minimum

International Travel

As soon as the trip is booked

  • Confirm if you need to secure a visa. The best place for US citizens to check is the US Department of State website which details out all visa requirements, travel advisories and country specific information.
  • Get any vaccines or prescription medication you may need

Right before we leave

  • Alert our bank and credit card company that we are going to be out of the country. That way the card isn’t flagged as possible fraud when we have no access to a physical bank branch to clear the issue.
  • Alert the US embassy that we will be overseas via STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) – should something happen when we are overseas, the government will know where we are and be better able to assist us
  • Transfer money to our savings to our checking account.

Do you have a list that you check before you travel? Is there anything on your list that I do not have included on mine?
