When we planned our trip to Alaska, we knew that going to Denali National Park was a must do. With our flight timing, we knew that we would be arriving late and would need to leave early to catch our bus around Denali. That meant that we wouldn’t have much time in the room, but after a long day of travel, I wanted to have a good night of sleep in a nice clean room.
I began my hotel search as I always do, by checking out what hotels in the area cost & narrowing down my search based on my criteria from there. I quickly came to the realization that there were two categories of hotels – extremely basic low cost and high end, luxury. I began to get frustrated, wanting a nice hotel at a reasonable price. I began to dig more and finally found McKinley Creekside Cabins. I was relieved as the economy creekside cabin was exactly what I had been looking for – within budget, clean & a quick 15 minutes from the park.
Prior to our arrival, the staff was in touch with us to schedule our check in time. Since we would be arriving late, they left our key & paperwork taped to the door of the main building. We followed the map to our cabin and we drove back to our room.
The first word that came to mind as we drove up to the cabin and opened the door was “cute”. The room was very clean, warm, nicely decorated and well maintained. It was small, but all we really needed for our purposes of a 1 night stay.
After our long flight and drive to Denali, we were both anxious to hop into bed and get some sleep. The bed was really comfortable and we slept well, so well it was hard to get up in the morning. The shower was very clean & the towels were nice and fluffy. One thing that I really liked was that they had big bottles of shampoo and body wash in the rooms – I find that so much nicer than the tiny bottles that you get at most hotels.
With the morning light, we were better able to see the creek & view of the hills and mountains around the hotel. It made me sad that we only had 1 night at the hotel as enjoying a glass of wine by the creek seemed like a really nice way to spend the evening.
We bought a cinnamon roll from the cafe to eat on the way to Denali. We had read about these in Tripadvisor reviews, but upon seeing it, thought there was no way that it was as good as people had said. Boy was I wrong, the cinnamon roll was not only huge but really delicious. It made us both wish that we had ordered one for ourselves! At the cafe we also picked up the lunches that we had pre-ordered when we booked our room as there is no food available in the park. It was a sack lunch with a turkey sandwich, fruit, chips and water. It was good, but a letdown after the bar was set so high from the cinnamon rolls.
I would highly recommend McKinley Creekside Cabins to anyone looking for a reasonably priced hotel in the Denali area. Although we stayed in the budget creekside cabin, the perfect size for 2 of us, there were also family rooms available if you had a larger group.
