Comfort Inn – New Orleans Airport

Andy and I had an early flight out of New Orleans, so we decided to stay by the airport. Not only was it more convenient, but it was also cheaper than the downtown area. After the positive experience that I had booking the Crowne Plaza Astor Hotel through Hotwire, I decided to give their opaque booking process another try. Hotwire has a feature that allows you to filter by amenities so I was able to confirm that our hotel would have an airport shuttle, something that we learned was not standard after we booked our room at the Extended Stay America Kenner.

Once I submitted my credit card information, I booked at the Comfort Inn, New Orleans Airport. While I wasn’t initially very excited, after looking at reviews on Tripadvisor, I was pleasantly surprised. The Comfort Inn had better reviews than many of the higher star hotels in the airport area.

We grabbed a cab from the French Quarter. Our taxi driver agreed to take us for the flat fee from the downtown area to the airport even though the hotel was a little further away. I think he realized that by bending the rules a little he would get a larger tip from us.

Once we entered the lobby we were a little disappointed. The front desk agent was not very pleasant or warm with us. She may have been having a bad day but she didn’t express any interest in checking us in. There was an issue with the card that Hotwire used to pay our bill, but luckily the hotel worked directly with Hotwire to get it cleared up so we didn’t need to get on the phone with them. I inquired what time the free shuttle service to the airport started to run and she advised 5am. We put our name on the list to get on the first shuttle as we didn’t want any possible delays to cause us to miss our flight or rush to our gate.

We were given our key to our room and headed up to our room. The room size was quite large, with a huge bathroom and a even mini fridge. We were pleased that everything was very clean and looked like it had been recently updated. For the first time on our trip we had a king size bed which made us both happy even though we knew that we wouldn’t get much sleep with our 4:30am wake up call. The bed included a number of different pillows from firm to soft so you could select your preferred pillow type.

The only two issues we had with the room were:

  1. The walls were a little thin. The couple in the room next to us were talking and we could hear them pretty well.
  2. There seemed to be a problem with the air conditioner. No matter what temperature we set the thermostat at, if we had the AC unit on it would just continue to cool the room. It definitely cooled off the room fast, but it never stopped. We tried turning the thermostat up to 80, but it just continued to blow cold air. We ended up just turning off the entire AC unit and dealt with the room being a little warm.

We woke up very early to catch the shuttle and met up with 3 other hotel guests catching the 5am shuttle to the airport. I was pleasantly surprised that everyone was on time. Our shuttle left right at 5am and it was a quick 5 minute ride to the airport.

If I was staying by the New Orleans airport again, I would consider staying at the Comfort Inn. With the large number of hotels in the area, I would do a quick price check to ensure that it was the best priced hotel that offered a free shuttle to the airport.
