One of the things that we like doing when we travel is planning a long layover in a city that we haven’t been to before. Even though Lynn had actually been to Beijing previously, I had never been and was really looking forward to seeing the Great Wall. Our long layover in Beijing was at the very end of our 3 week honeymoon around Southeast Asia as we headed back home to Chicago.

We didn’t have the greatest weather in Beijing for our long layover, but that didn’t stop us from doing everything that we had planned. Our first stop was at the Great Wall, and we were lucky to get early enough that we pretty much had the entire wall to ourselves. After that we drove back into the city and stopped for lunch at a Chinese noodle house and had some authentic soup. Our last stop was at Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City, where our guide gave us the quick tour as we didn’t have a ton of time. After our quick tour we were back in our car and headed to the airport for the rest of our flight back to Chicago. Overall, it was a great layover and so much better than spending our time sitting in the airport.
