Andy and I often like to fly out of Chicago after work because even though we get to our vacation destination late, we are able to go first thing in the morning to explore the town. Knowing that we would be getting in late and leaving early, I started looking for low cost options near the hotel. Since we had a rental car for our trip, I was able to expand our options beyond hotels that offer a free airport shuttle.

Selecting the Baymont Inn & Suites

I found the Baymont Inn & Suites through Kayak when I searched for hotels within a 10 mile radius of the airport that had good or excellent reviews. I then filtered it from lowest cost to highest cost. After I narrowed it down to my top 3 hotels, I went on TripAdvisor to check reviews.

The Baymont Inn was the best priced hotel that had good reviews. I booked a prepaid room to save a little extra money since I knew that our travel dates would not change. In hindsight I should have also booked through the travel portion of the AA shopping portal to earn 2x miles on my booking.

Whenever I stay at a chain hotel, I always opt to earn airline miles for my stay. I was fortunate that when we were at the Baymont Inn that Southwest was offering double miles for weeknight stays. Our inexpensive room earned us 1200 Southwest points for our 1 night stay which was an excellent bonus.

Check In

After we drove to the Baymont Inn which is located in a kind of obscure part of town, we parked and headed to check in. The front desk agent was very friendly, making us feel very welcome.

As part of our paperwork I had to sign this contract of sorts that said I wouldn’t invite anyone to my room, would not do drugs and would not smoke. In all of the hotels that I have checked into in my life, this was the first time I ever experienced anything like this. I think because the hotel is inexpensive and in a strange part of town that there may be less than desirable people that do illegal or illicit things in the rooms. Obviously I had no issues signing it since we were going to just sleep and get on the road in the morning.

The Room

When we opened the door to the room we were surprised how large the room was. The room included our king size bed as well as an arm chair, desk, mini fridge and microwave. The bathroom was small and a little dated but had everything that we needed. Our only complaint was that the toilet was super loud when filling up the tank after it was flushed.

The most important to us wherever we travel is that the room is clean. We were happy to see that the housekeeping staff took pride in their work to ensure that the room was nice for us.

I had read on TripAdvisor that you could hear traffic from the rooms. We were on the top floor and did not hear anything.

Complimentary Breakfast

Although it wasn’t included in my paperwork when I booked the hotel, we got a complimentary breakfast included in our room rate. While it wasn’t anything to write home about, it saved us money which was great.

Final Thoughts

If you are looking for an inexpensive hotel that is clean, check out the Baymont Inn. The hotel is an easy 15 minute drive from the airport and while they don’t have a shuttle, if you’re getting in late or leaving early, it’s a great option.

If a prime location is important to you, you may want to consider a different hotel.
